A kundli — janam kundali, birth chart, horoscope chart — is a map of the sky drawn for the exact moment and place of your birth. Nothing mystical happens in the drawing itself: it records where the sun, moon and planets stood, seen from your birthplace, arranged into twelve segments called houses.
The three coordinates that define everything are date, time and place. Date and place set the planets' positions; the time sets the ascendant — the sign rising on the eastern horizon — which decides where the twelve houses begin. This is why astrologers ask for your birth time and why a wrong time produces a confidently wrong chart.
The moon's position matters most in the Vedic tradition. The sign it occupies is your rasi (moon sign) and the star-cluster it sits in is your janma nakshatra — the basis of dasha timing, matching, and most of what a practising astrologer reads first.
Reading order in practice: ascendant and its lord, the moon and its nakshatra, then the strength of each house lord, then the running dasha period. Yogas and doshas — special combinations — come after, always weighed against the whole chart rather than in isolation.
