How Kundli Matching Works in Vedic Astrology

Kundli matching, also known as Horoscope matching or Gun Milan, is an age-old Vedic tradition practiced before marriage to ensure compatibility between prospective partners. The Ashtakoot system is the most widely used method, evaluating 8 different aspects (Koots) of compatibility between two birth charts. Each Koot carries a specific number of points, and the total maximum score is 36.

The 8 Koots Explained

KootMax PointsWhat It Measures
Varna1Spiritual compatibility and ego levels of the couple
Vashya2Mutual attraction, dominance and control in the relationship
Tara3Birth star compatibility and destined fortune together
Yoni4Physical and sexual compatibility, intimacy levels
Graha Maitri5Mental compatibility, intellectual and friendship bond
Gana6Temperament matching -- Deva (divine), Manushya (human), Rakshasa (demon)
Bhakoot7Emotional compatibility, family welfare, financial prosperity
Nadi8Health compatibility and genetic factors, most important Koot

Understanding the Score

The total score ranges from 0 to 36 points. Here is how to interpret the results:

  • Below 18 points: Generally not recommended for marriage. The couple may face significant challenges in compatibility. However, other factors in the chart should also be considered.
  • 18-24 points: Average compatibility. The marriage can work with mutual effort, understanding and compromise from both partners.
  • 25-32 points: Very good compatibility. The couple is well-matched and can expect a harmonious married life.
  • Above 32 points: Excellent match. The couple shares exceptional compatibility across all dimensions.

Nadi Dosha -- The Most Critical Factor

Nadi is the most important Koot with 8 points. A Nadi Dosha occurs when both partners have the same Nadi (Adi, Madhya, or Antya). This is considered the most serious compatibility concern as it relates to health and progeny. However, several exceptions can cancel Nadi Dosha, including different Rashi but same Nakshatra, same Rashi but different Nakshatra, and other planetary factors.

Beyond the Score

While Ashtakoot matching provides a useful framework, experienced astrologers also examine Manglik Dosha, Bhakoot Dosha cancellations, planetary strength, Dasha periods, and the overall chart balance. A low score does not necessarily mean a bad marriage, just as a high score does not guarantee a perfect one. Use this tool as a starting point and consult an experienced Vedic astrologer for a comprehensive analysis.
