Calculating Muhurat...
Muhurat (Muhurta) selection is a cornerstone of Vedic astrology and Hindu tradition. The ancient sages recognized that time is not uniform -- certain moments carry more favorable energy than others. By choosing an auspicious Muhurat for important activities, one aligns their actions with the cosmic flow, increasing the chances of success and positive outcomes.
A good Muhurat is determined by analyzing multiple factors from the Vedic Panchang (Hindu calendar). These include the Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (Sun-Moon combination), Karana (half of Tithi), and the Vara (weekday). Additionally, the positions of benefic and malefic planets, the Ascendant at the chosen time, and the absence of inauspicious periods like Rahu Kaal are considered.
The Hora system divides the day into 24 planetary hours, each ruled by one of the seven classical planets. The first Hora of the day is ruled by the planet that rules that weekday (e.g., Sunday starts with Sun Hora). Activities aligned with the ruling planet of the current Hora are believed to be more successful. For example, Jupiter Hora is excellent for education and spiritual activities, Venus Hora for arts and relationships, and Mercury Hora for business and communication.
Abhijit Muhurat is a universally auspicious time period that occurs around midday every day (except Wednesdays according to some traditions). It lasts approximately 48 minutes and is considered so powerful that it can overcome most other doshas or inauspicious combinations. The word "Abhijit" means "victorious," and activities started during this Muhurat are believed to succeed. It is the most recommended time for starting new ventures when no other specific Muhurat is available.
Dur Muhurta (inauspicious Muhurta) are specific time periods during the day when starting new activities is discouraged. There are typically two Dur Muhurta periods each day, each lasting about 48 minutes. The timings depend on the length of the day and the specific weekday. Avoiding these periods for important beginnings is a standard practice in Muhurat selection.
