Calculating timings...
Rahu Kaal (also spelled Rahu Kalam) is an inauspicious time period in Hindu astrology that occurs every day, lasting approximately 90 minutes. It is named after Rahu, the north lunar node, which is considered a shadow planet (Chhaya Graha) in Vedic astrology. Rahu is associated with confusion, illusion, and unexpected obstacles. Activities begun during Rahu Kaal are believed to face complications, delays, or failures.
The day (from sunrise to sunset) is divided into 8 equal parts, each approximately 1.5 hours long. One of these 8 segments is designated as Rahu Kaal, and it varies by the day of the week. The calculation is based on the actual sunrise and sunset times at a specific location, which is why Rahu Kaal timings differ from city to city.
| Day | Rahu Kaal Segment | Approximate Time (Sunrise 6:00 AM) |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | 2nd segment | 7:30 AM - 9:00 AM |
| Tuesday | 7th segment | 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM |
| Wednesday | 5th segment | 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM |
| Thursday | 6th segment | 1:30 PM - 3:00 PM |
| Friday | 4th segment | 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM |
| Saturday | 3rd segment | 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM |
| Sunday | 8th segment | 4:30 PM - 6:00 PM |
Note: Exact timings vary by location and season based on actual sunrise/sunset times.
Yamagandam (also called Yama Gandam) is another inauspicious period ruled by Yama, the god of death and dharma. Like Rahu Kaal, it is calculated by dividing the day into 8 segments. Yamagandam is considered especially unfavorable for travel, medical procedures, and activities related to health. Starting a journey during Yamagandam is traditionally avoided.
Gulika (also called Mandi or Gulika Kaal) is an inauspicious sub-period associated with Saturn. It is considered harmful for initiating any new activity. Gulika is particularly important in Muhurat (electional astrology) and is avoided when selecting auspicious times for ceremonies, business launches, and other significant events.
While starting new activities is discouraged, Rahu Kaal is actually considered favorable for certain things:
